Coming with airplane from far away Europa -
from my view seems Singapore to be like a bridge between south east Asia and Europa.
A good place to make a stop and to see the new which will waiting in next.
And in special for the traveller- to make a break after the long hard flight after 12 hours.
So it is a good idea to make a "stopover" in Singapore, and there is much to see - and real - mostly later one will find, the stop was to short...
Of course this are only some short remarks, and only from outside, a tourist view...
There is much to see in Singapore and it is easy to find a tour operator and mostly it is (coming at first or not so much time) the best and very easy.
In remebering we same to took at first some of this tours.
But later it is and shure not surprising it is very easy to travel alone-
a little school english (like me) is good - a little more is better, but no problem, it is easy as tourist to go around,
simply do as traveller same like home in Münchner U-Bahn or Berlin S-Bahn-
here in Singapore simply follow the MRT - lines.-
A good start is of course walking around the centre of the city, vieving the old history roots,
so to the St. Andrews, the Raffles, the Harbour site and the Merlion, to the Quays and so on.
Later it is interest to remark the different cultural roots special from Malay, Chinese, Europa, India...
There is much to see after coming from cold Europa in the equatoral zone here in Singapore-
at first in my remebering the nice view at boat quay (here at Photo in 1997) with the so much different restaurants -
from german Bayrischen Biergarten over Masakan Bali, Nasi Uduk Jawa until North India Kashmiri cuisine ...delicious all
and all together at the waterline,
and all around a good place to sit and to talk together -
and in remebering the best I found there if the weather is quite good.
- Pros:Very nice city and culture, very interest for short or longer stopover
- Cons:Unfortunately in every holiday the same - too less time!
- In a nutshell:Singapore the bridge betweeen Europa & South East Asia

Good comparison with the issues with diving & Sentosa! I guess you know Durian's are banned from air baggage!! The smell is considered obnoxious.. at least the taste is not ;-)
