Botswana gained independence from Britain in 1966, five years after its southern neighbour South Africa. With less than two million inhabitants, Botswana has earned a reputation of being one of Africa's quiet achievers. In fact, through sound fiscal policy and management, Botswana has maintained one of the world's highest economic growth rates since independence with the national currency, the Pula, often outperforming the South African rand.
Botswana is an African wildlife treasure chest, with outstanding game reserves in the northern part of the country, including Linyanti, Savuti and Chobe.
