Joseph Manigault House

The Charleston Historic District Historic Buildings Review

The Charleston Historic District.
The district has many historic buildings from the 18th and 19th Centuries. A few are accessable as House Museums, giving visitors an oportunity to see what life was like in a different era. One of the best of these is the Joseph Manigault House (See picture). It was built in 1803 by a wealthy family who made their fortune through rice farming amngst other things.

There are many other beautiful houses, many open to the public, giving one a glimpse into life during the latter 18th and 19th Centuries.

Directions: Charleston is on the south coast of South Carolina.

Slave Cabins - Charleston

Slave Cabins

Boone Hall Plantation Gardens and Plantations Review

Boone Hall is one of several plantations easily visited as a day trip from the city. It was built in the latter 18th Century during the period when Tobacco was the main crop cultivated. Cotton did not come into the picture until the first half of the 19th Century.
The rooms which are shown by costumed guides are decorated in period furnishings, many of which are original. In addition to the mansion, are the brick slave cabins on the grounds. Here, the slaves of the plantation lived when not working in the fields.

Its significance in US history is undeniable. For anyone who is either a history or Civil war buff, a visit here is mandatory. The fort itself is a classic example of mid 19th Century military architecture.
