Off The Beaten Path: The Tenement House Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located in the Lower East Side, this museum is overlooked by the majority of visitors to NYC. This museum showcases 4 seperate tenement apartments as they were dating from the 1890s through the early 1950s. You see how early immigrants lived and the conditions in which they lived, with little light, poor sanitation and ventilation. It is a fascinating look into a slice of american history. Tours are led by a guide and there is a admission charge. A short film is shown in the same building where tickets are purchased.

Off The Beaten Path: Museum of the American Indian
  • Tip Rating:
  • This intriging museum is located in the old customs house in Lower New York, just north of Battery Park. It houses one of the largest collections of American indian Artifacts in the United States. It also displays contemporary arts made by Native Americans. The museum is administered by the Smithsonian Institute and should not be passed up by anyone with even a little interest.

Off The Beaten Path: Dahesh Museum of Art
  • Tip Rating:
  • This little gem of a museum has a nice collection of largely 19th century art and, have a major special exhibition on a regular basis. One of their moost popular exhibits, which is currently ongoing, is Napolean in Egypt. It features paintings, lithographs and other artefacts from his 1799 expedition to Egypt.

The museum also has a well stocked gift shop, full of books and a wide assortment of crafts and gifts. The gallery is in the basement, the gift shop on street level and the museums cafe restaurant is on the 2nd floor. Food is excellent, but a wee bit on the pricy size. A good sandwich or entree salad runs from $13.00-$19.00 USD.

No photography is permitted. So if you want any kind of pictures, you'll have to settle for postcards.

The Museum is currently looking for a new home.
