With all its canals, no wonder Amsterdam is called the Venice of the North. Having just returned from my Benelux Trip, I now know. It is a lovely city with lots to do and see. Of course, it is largely a 17th Century City, the era of the Golden Age. Even though the city was founded in 1275, it was in the 1600s that the city really came to be one of the most important cities of the Reformation.
The Canals are lined with many beautiful 17th century buildings. Now, many occupied by shops and eateries. Some like the one I stayed at, are converted hotels. Amsterdam has a wealth of historic sites and museums. Enough to satisify everyone, from the most casual to the avid museum buff. Yes. Amsterdam has it all.

HORSCHECK Mon Aug 31, 2009 21:43 UTC Stephen, lovely little page about Amsterdam here. Can you believe that I have never visited Amsterdam, although it is only less than 400 km from where I live. | johngayton Fri Jun 5, 2009 23:29 UTC Nice hotel! Hamster Jam :)) | nora_south_africa Wed Aug 6, 2008 14:23 UTC great tips thanx for sharing | Redlats Fri May 5, 2006 22:48 UTC Stephen, Nice page. Obviously, Amsterdam is one of those places that one has to stay a while just to see a part of what there is to offer. Too bad so many museums/galleries don't allow photos! |
