Mexico City, Palanque and the Yucatan Mexico, also called Mesoamerica, was home to a variety of ancient cultures who lived here between 1200 B.C. and 1521 A.D. The Maya being the most famous. Though my trip was for archeaology, other come to Mexico for its Spanish culture or for the resorts of Acapulco, Cancun, Ixtapa or Cozumel. While in Mexico City, an excursion to the Pyramids of Teotiuachan is highly recommended (see article in site). Also make sure you visit the National Museum of Anthropology. It gives a great overview and ranks as one of the great museums of the world. A side trip to Villahermosa and La Venta Park may be worth your while (see below). The site of Palanque is a must for history and archeology buffs. Merida is the gateway to the Yucatan. Cancun can be a gateway as well. Here, you can visit Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Tulum and some of the many lesser known sites in the area. Though I didn't, you can also catch a Bullfight as well as sampling the cuisine and cultures of this spectacular country.
NOTE* I may be going back to Mexico in the not to distant future. Primarily to Guadalajara and its vicinity. |
