Located on the Bay of Naples in Campania, Pompeii was a once thriving city full of magnificent villas for the wealthy and well to do. Then, on the 24th of August, 79 AD, Mt. Vesuvius erupted and began one of the most storied natural disasters in history.
Pompeii and several other towns were destroyed. The former was buried in numerous layers of ash, not only burying the city, but also its residents. Few would escape their doom. Today, nearly 2000 years later, the ruins draws throngs from around the world to see one of the best preserved roman cities in the world. |
