Site of Historic Fort Osage

Fort Osage has been carefully re-created as it was built by Capt. William Clark and his troops in 1808. Clark and Captain Meriwether Lewis had observed this bluff overlooking the Missouri River in 1804. Clark returned to open the first fur-trading fort in the territory of the Louisiana Purchase. The fort and visitors center allow visitors a glimpse into life for incoming Europeans and the local Indian tribes during the early 19th century.

It's a good idea to combine a visit to Sibley and the fort with a tour of nearby Independence, Missouri.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:The fort is interesting.
  • Cons:I don't remember seeing any restaurants here; it's a very small town.
  • In a nutshell:The fort makes an interesting side trip from Kansas City or Independence.
