"Fort McHenry National Historic Site" Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine by basstbn

Historically Import Site

Fort McHenry occupies an important place in American history - less because of the strategic importance of a battle fought there than for a patriotic poem that was penned on a ship in its bay. During the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key was so inspired by the patriots' defense of the fort that he wrote the words to "The Star-spangled Banner." In 1931, the words set to the melody of "To Anacreon in Heaven" (ironically an English song), became the national anthem of the United States of America.

Musicians and non-musicians alike still remark that the melody is difficult to sing and requires a wide vocal range. However, the lyrics strike a meaningful chord for US citizens.

I went there with my parents when I was a kid (While living in Baltimore). The unusual shape makes it very interesting.

Never lived closer to Baltimore than Ohio, but have also been to Fort McHenry one time. We very much appreciate things NOT in our backyard. Well done.

I live in Baltimore and have been to Fort McHenry only one time. We just do not seem to appreciate those things in our own backyards.
