WELCOME TO SHAWNEE, KANSAS
Shawnee is a western suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri (not Kansas) and is one of the oldest and most historic towns in Johnson County, Kansas. The first white settlers were French explorers and trappers in 1724.
The original tribes of the area were the Comanche, Pawnee, Wichita, Kanza and Osage. It was not until the 1820's that the Shawnee Indians arrived in the area, after being forced to migrate from Missouri and Ohio. Prior to 1854, when Kansas Territory was opened for settlement, the only white people living in the area were those associated with three Indian missions in the area.
At one time known as Gum Springs, Shawnee Town was sacked by Quantrill's raiders during the bloody period of fighting between Kansas and Missouri prior to the outbreak of the Civil War in the east.
The city hall, shown above, features three large murals painted by Charles Goslin, depicting 90 scenes and individuals from the city's history.
My wife and I lived in Shawnee for 25 years before moving to nearby Overland Park, Kansas in April of 2001.
Of touristic interest is Old Shawnee Town, best seen during Old Shawnee Days early in June, and the Johnson County Historical Museum. |

Similar in some respects to Oklahoma's Shawnee. | Hexepatty Sun Aug 17, 2003 05:09 UTC What a lesson in where our native people traveled to / from. I didn't know the Shawnee were hauled in. I'm cherokee from N Carolina. My Great Great Grandmother was on the Trail of Tears. THANKS for the lesson! |
