Small town with real charm

As much as I enjoy visiting small towns in the great plains states, there are few of them which I would describe as charming. Lindsborg is one. One which is well worth of visit of one or more days. It owes its charm to its links, past and present, to Sweden and Swedish culture, its arts scene, its colorful downtown, and its friendly people.

The Dala

There is probably nothing more symbolic of Lindsborg than the ever-present dala. This dala stands in front of Hemslojd, the dala horse factory in Lindsborg, Kansas. What is a dala? I like Marci Penner's explanation in her excellent Kansas Guidebook for Explorers: "Eighteenth-century Swedish lumberjacks used to carve Dala horses in their off hours at their logging camps. When they returned home, they would pass them out to the village children. During the ninteenth century it became the custom to paint the wooden horses." It was a natural for Swedish immigrants to bring this colorful tradition with them to the rich and fertile plains of central Kansas.

Downtown Lindsborg

Art galleries, restaurants (several serving Swedish specialties), antique stores, more. Great place for a stroll if you're not into shopping.
