the Other Kansas City

There are two Kansas Cities - a major city in Missouri, and its little brother across the river in Kansas. Locals call this city KCK. It doesn't get much respect. Almost all of Kansas City's major attractions are on the Missouri side or in other suburbs. However, Kansas City, Kansas, has made major strides in recent years and has attracted some stellar attractions including the Kansas Speedway - a major stop on the NASCAR circuit.

In my KCK page, I will list only those attractions I have visited in this city. Other sites in Kansas are listed under the name of the town or city in which they are actually located.

Ethnic Neighborhoods

Working-class immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries found KCK good place to settle, and the cities ethnically-centered neighborhoods reflect that today. Serbs and Croatians, Poles, Hispanics, and Germans are some of the larger groups, as well as the descendants of freed African-American slaves.

For the visitor, there are excellent little family eating spots, colorful churches, and an occasional ethnic festival.

Kaw Point

Among the historic sites in Kansas City, Kansas, is Kaw Point, where Lewis and Clark's Expedition of Discovery camped for four nights before resuming their journey northward along the Missouri River.
