Franklin, Kansas

I visited Franklin and several of its neighboring towns with 70 fellow members of the Kansas Explorers Club, part of a semi-regular series of outings to rural Kansas communities.

Back from the Rubble

In 2003, Franklin was devastated by an F4 tornado which claimed seven lives and left more than 50 injured. In the intervening years since that tragic event, the community has demonstrated grit and determination befitting descendants of those rugged coal miners who settled this area. Franklin continues to rebuild.

In the accompanying picture, we see a remnant of that tornado - a sheet of corrugated metal wrapped around a pecan tree. To the left is a new, state-of-the-art storm warning siren, purchased with funds donationed from several organizations and individuals, including the late actor and philanthropist, Paul Newman.
