One of the oldest towns in Kansas, Fort Scott was a natural outgrowth of the presence of a frontier fort by the same name. The downtown district is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fort Scott was established as one of a series of forts along the western frontier of the United States, meant to maintain order between the whites in the east and the Indians of the Kansas Territory. It later served as a Union Army outpost during the Civil War. Most of what stands today is not original, but faithful duplicates of the early structures.
