Santa Fe Trail History

Most travelers generally regard the state of Kansas as a flat, uninteresting place with few places worthy of a visit. That does not apply to Council Grove, however - it's one of my favorite towns in Kansas and is an interesting place to visit, for its historical significance if nothing else. There are 24 sites on the National Register of Historic Places in this town of approximately 2300 residents.

Council Grove was located on the old Santa Fe Trail, the trail used in the mid-1800's to ship goods to and from the east (Missouri) to the New Mexico territory. Many buildings from that time period still stand are open to tourists. And, the town is located right in the middle of the scenic Flint Hills.
