No Blue Rapids and the Town Square Is Round

I was told there used to be rapids caused by a dam which no longer exists on the Blue River. And yes, the town square is round. Kind of like a huge traffic round-about, except this one has businesses and parking around it. And a police station in the middle.

According to an article in the February 2010 Kansas Explorer newsletter, this round town square was the focal point of a contest for teens looking for excitement back in the 1940s and 50s. The object: allow your automobile to coast (ignition off) from the top of the hill south of town into town and around the "square." Most times around the circle made you the winner.

Alcove Spring on the Oregon Trail

Alcove Spring is certainly the most notable of the local sites on the route of the Oregon Trail. Located near the Independence Crossing, where travelers crossed the Big Blue, this spring with adjacent woodlands and meadows, provided a key campground before attempting the crossing
