Historical Kansas Rivertown

Atchison, Kansas, is a pleasant small town located on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River.

The town's chief claim to fame is as the home town of the famed aviatrix, Amelia Earhart. The house where she lived is open to the public, and on my first visit, we were shown around by a very knowledgeable tour guide. I believe that she was either a relative or friend of the family. The house is in a very pretty setting overlooking the Missouri River. Many of the houses in the area are fine old Victorian homes.

Atchison is also the home of Benedictine College, the only US Coast Guard station in Kansas, a major distillery, and was one of the early homes of the famous Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. In addition, the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped on the site of present day Atchison on July 4, 1804.

Pros and Cons
