Things To Do: A Massive Gorge

What began three million years ago as a trickle of water across solid granite is now this canyon. And in another 2,500 years, it will be one foot deeper. It's a deep canyon, but only 40 to 50 feet wide at the bottom and a few hundred feet at the top. Spanish missionaries were the first Europeans to report sightings of the gorge in 1642.

We rode the world's steepest incline railway down the walls to the canyon floor. It's a trip of about 5 to 6 minutes at a 45-degree angle. The views are worth it.

Things To Do: The Raging Arkansas River

Viewed from the bridge high above, you don't realize the size of the river or what rapids are below you. It is also difficult to imagine that this is the same Arkansas River that is so shallow and moves so lazily through southern Kansas. (Of course, that's because Colorado farmers drain off so much of it for irrigation of their fields leaving Kansas farmers high and dry.) Enough editorializing - it is neat to watch the waters, as well as the rafters and kayakers on this stretch of river. Did I mention that this river is pronounced Ar -KAN'-sas in the state of Kansas and ARK'-in-saw every place else?

Back at the top, my children were more than happy to find a play area to run off some energy before getting back in the car.

One last activity before leaving: a train ride for the kids aboard this scale-model vintage train of an 1893 locomotive. The one mile ride was included in the park's admission ticket.

Martinewezel Mon Feb 13, 2006 19:43 UTC This railway seems cool! I hope to go back to CO one day. Meanwhile I put this place on my wish list. Thanks Frank! | Stephen-KarenConn Thu Oct 27, 2005 15:26 UTC Nice page. I visited the Royal Gorge for the first time last August with my son who lives in Colorado. Like you, I don't remember much about Canon City, but the Royal Gorge was breathtaking. |
