Yes, Monterosso al Mare is the biggest and busiest of the Cinque Terre villages, and it has a split personality - the old and new towns. Having uttered that disclaimer, I must say that I would love to visit this village and to spend a lot more time getting acquainted with it.
It does have the nicest beach we saw in the region, one of the most scenic hiking trails we experienced in our Italy trip, lots of shops and eating places, and the mysterious and macabre Oratory of the Dead.
