Small village in an hilly region, Hongkeng, even if quite touristed (not painful), is very nice and interesting.
There is a great number of Tu Lou, square and round ones, some of them being true palace. The village is lively. When we arrived inhabitants were drying khaki fruits to eat and roses for the tea.
It's worth to spend half a day in Hongkeng, so you have time to wander from houses to houses and to walk through the terrassed rice fields around.
There are other place outside Fujian where you find Tu Lou. Eg in South Jiangxi near Longnan (100 km south of Ganzhou): the buildings are square one, built with stones and look like fortresses. Others are found in Guandong, near Meizhou, along the border with Fujian.

How nice that you were able to see a traditional Chinese opera near the village! I have heard them on the radio (in Vietnam) but never seen one live. Funny that US military experts thought those round houses were rocket launching bases.
A very interesting page - I would love to visit and photograph these old houses
My family ancestry is Hakka. So great to see this wonderful village through your pictures and tips. Cheers, SL :)
What an amazing place. Those round houses or should I say villages look very interesting.
