"Northern Thailand & the Golden Triangle" Northern Thailand by tim07

The far north of Thailand is known as the Golden Triangle, it's the meeting point of Thailand, Laos & Myanmar. The area is historically known for opium production, but today it's an area for travellers to explore beautiful rivers, mountains & historic towns.

I only spent a day here on an excursion from Chiang Mai. In that time I managed to visit Sop Ruak, the point where the borders of the 3 countries meet. Whilst there I took boat ride on the Mekong River. A short stop was made at Mae Sai, the northernmost town in Thailand. This gave me a chance to view the border crossing with Myanmar. The tour also stopped at a couple of hill-tribe villages & an area of hot springs.

From what I saw in my brief visit to Northern Thailand, I feel it to be a beautiful area with a fascinating history. It's a place that deserves a lot longer than a day to fully explore its many delights.
