To get into Petra you must walk through the 1.2km long Siq. This passage through the rock is as narrow as about 5 metres & as high as 200 metres in places. The ever changing colour of the rock is a beautiul sight to see. One thing to be aware of as you walk through in awe of your surroundings are the horse & carriages that bring some of the vsitors in, you hear them coming though.

Even though you are anticipating this & have been expecting to see it after you've turned many corners in the Siq, nothing can prepare you for your first glimpse of the Treasury. Through the dark of the Siq the sunlight on the columns giving you your fist sight of it will never be forgotten.

This is where you fall in love with Petra. Carved into the rock at 43m high & 30m wide the facade is an amazing piece of work. Stand in the entrance inbetween the columns & you get some idea how impressive the scale of it is. The interior however is just an unadorned square hall.

Thought to have been built in the 1st century BC and carved out of the rock, the Theatre had an original capacity of about 3000. This was increased by the Romans in AD 106 to about 8500. The Theatre was damaged in an earthquake in AD 363, however a lot of the rows are intact & it's a fascinating place to visit.

Built in about AD 106 by the Romans only a few of the columns that lined it have been re-erected. Off the street there are the remains of the lower, middle & upper market. Even more impressive though is the remains of the Great Temple.

Built in about 30 BC by the Nabataens & one of the few free-standing structures in Petra. The Temple was however destroyed in the 3rd Century AD, it originally stood 23m high & had marble staircases, imposing columns & a raised platform for worship. The remains can give you some idea of how impressive the Temple once was.

Similar in design to the Treasury & just as impressive, far bigger though 50m wide & 45m high. The Monastery with its towering columns & large urn flanked by two half pediments is definately worth the walk or ride up to it.

Carved into the rock are the impressive burial places that are collectively known as the 'Royal Tombs'. The one pictured is the Urn Tomb, this is reachable by stairs. Once there you can stand on the open terrace above the open vaults and view the columns & room inside close up.
