HNK I. pl. Zajc - Rijeka

HNK I. pl. Zajc

HNK Ivan pl. Zajc

National theatre in Rijeka is work of Fellner and Helmer, Viennese architectural studio specialising in theatre design. HNK was opened in 1885, and still is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Few years ago, park in front of the theatre was rebuilt in its original look as it was when the theatre was built. Of course, we still have to wait to see it in perfect look, because trees still have to grow.

Address: Uljarska 1

Directions: On the seaside of the main road Lisinski, near centre

The Kawasaki fountain

This fountain presents friendship between Rijeka and Kawasaki, city in Japan. A sculpture of two children and a bird was a gift from Japan in 1988. and become enduring symbol of friendship. This fountain is favourite meeting point for youngsters.

The Korzo fountain

Made in 1996, this is modern sculpture shaped like a silver cylinder quietly brimming over with water with the small source in the centre.

The Public Drinking fountain

Near the railway station this conical drinking fountain with its constant flow of water was built in 1997. to provide thirsty travelers with a cool refreshing drinks. It stands on the way from railway station to the bus station/sea port so many travelers really use it. On the same place was before old similar fountain from 1873.

Old paper millstones

Symbol of conection between Rijeka's industrial heritage and water. Two milestones with their original machinery which was once used in the city first paper mill, stands in the centre. Its on the Kobler square and from the fountain you have perfect view on the Zuta ura tower from the back.

Zuta ura from the main street Korzo - Rijeka

Zuta ura from the main street Korzo

City tower "Zuta ura"

In the centre of the town is tower called Zuta ura (yellow clock). The tower was part of city fortifications, and during the 17th century a clock was added to the tower
Under the clock you can see two-headed Habsburg eagle and an inscription dating from 1695 over the entrance. There are also inscriptions on the architrave, one of them relating to Leopold I. On June 6, 1659, Leopold issued a charter granting Rijeka the right to use as its coat of arms the double-headed eagle, both heads facing in the same direction, standing on a vessel from which water flows. Under the coat of arms is the inscription INDEFICIENTER (meaning inexhaustible). The coat of arms is also on the tower. Tower is historical separation between old town and new town, part of Rijeka, now centre built completly on the area stolen from sea. Being an important cultural monument, the City Tower was renovated and conserved in 1983.

Church was built in 1790 according to the project of the Rijeka architect Ignazio Hencek at iniciative and financial support of small colony of Serbs, known as "Sarajlije" with Bosnian Serb origins.

Legend has it that the Governor of Rijeka became aggravated by the repeated pleas of the Serbs for a building site, but most of the people of Rijeka was against orthodox church. Standing in front of the City Tower, major threw a stone into the sea saying: "That is where you can build your church!". The resolved Serbs filled in the sea with earth and on this embankment, they built their church.
The church houses a considerable collected of icons brought over from Bosnia or acquired in Vojvodina.

Trsat fortification from distance - Rijeka

Trsat fortification from distance

Trsat fortification

The history of the hill-fort dates back to prehistoric times beginning with the Illyrian tribe of Yapod, past the Romans who built their fort on this site to the numerous owners, who each left their own mark on this beautiful fortification. The appearance and the purpose of the fort-hill was shaped through the centuries by the Frankopans, the Habsburgs, the Captains of Bakar and finally by Count Laval Nugent.

From the fortification you have unforgetable view on Rijeka and Kvarner gulf.

Directions: You can get there by bus (local line number 1 or 1A) or by foot from the city centre, going upstairs on another monument: TRSAT STAIRS OF PETAR KRUZIÆ.
