History

First settlements in Rijeka dates to neolithics, and the first known towns were Tarsatica (Celtic village on the hill) and Liburni (Illyiric tribe) harbour.
In the time of Augustus, the Romans rebuilt Tarsatica as a municipium on the right bank of the river Rjecina (can be translated as big river) as Flumen .
After the 4th century the city was rededicated to St. Vitus, the city's patron saint, as Terra Fluminis sancti Sancti Viti or in German Sankt Veit am Pflaumb. In medieval times Rijeka got its Croatian name, Rika svetoga Vida (River of St. Vitus).
During the medieval city was surrounded by a wall and was a feudal stronghold. The fort was in the center of the city, at its highest point.
Created a free port in 1723, Rijeka during the 18th and 19th centuries was passed among the Habsburgs' Austrian, Croatian, and Hungarian possessions until being attached to Hungary for the third and last time in 1870. Although Croatia had constitutional autonomy within Hungary, the City of Rijeka was independent, governed directly from Budapest by an appointed governor, as Hungary's only international port. There was competition between Austria's Port of Trieste and Hungary's Port of Rijeka.
Between 1920. and 1924. Rijeka was free state, under the name Slobodna Rijecka Republika (or italian Stato libero di Fiume).
On 3 March 1922 the fascists carried out a coup d'état and the legal government escaped to Kraljevica, so Rijeka become first Fascist country ever.

In January 1924 the Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes signed the Rome Agreement, agreeing to the annexation of Fiume by Italy.
After World War II Rijeka become part of Yugoslavia, and during the 1991. part of the new country - Croatia.

Trsat

Sanctuary of Madonna Trsatian is Built 135 meters above the sea level on the Trsat hill 7 centuries ago, near the left bank of river Rjecina. There are many traveller offerings and treasure bringed as gift to St. Mary. Among other points of interest are the Gothic sculpture of (Gospa Slunjska) the Madonna of Slunj and works by the Baroque painter C. Tasce.
Croatian noble Vuk Krsto Frankopan is buried in one of the churches.
Under the church are long steps which goes to the sea level built by Croatian hero Petar Kruzic , who fought against Turks in 16th century.
On the top of the hill is a historic castle or fortress in a strategic location. It is great place to see the whole Kvarner gulf and panorama of Rijeka.

Korzo

Main street of Rijeka has name Korzo. It is long and wide street with lot of shops, squares and monuments with the City tower named Žuta ura (yellow clock) in the centre. On the city tower is situated city helmet (two headed eagle) wich is unique because that is only medieval two headed eagle whose both heads looks at the same side.
