MEXICO CITY - 20 million people place

by Lendule1234 - last update: Oct 31, 2007

Introduction

It's an amazing city with around 20 million people, so it can get really crowded. It also seems like everybody has a car - basically, everything that has four wheels is to be seen on the road - so prepare yourself for traffic. Pollution is also an issue; you will probably ask a taxi driver to close the windows to avoid exhaust fumes. In the centre, around popular Zocalo, you will be all right though.
Interesting thing - Mexico City has been built on the lake and it's been sinking 2 cm every year, so wuite a few historical buildings are under heavy structure of scaffolding including a famous Basilica of Guadalupe.

Zocalo

Plaza of the Constitution is definitely worth seeing with its Palacio Nacional (with the fresco on the staircase and first floor by the muralist Diego Rivera 'Historia y perspectiva de Mexico' (History and Perspective of Mexico), painted between 1926 and 1945, it depicts the history of Mexico from Indian times to the period after the revolution)), Metropolitan Cathedral and the Aztec ruins of Templo Mayor.

Just off Zocalo

Just like 15mins walk from Zocalo, towards Torre Latinoamericana, Mexico City's first skyscraper there is a square with Palacio de Bellas Artes, just nest to a large park where you can rest and enjoy some tacos or churros (typical fried dough pastry with sugar) that can be easily bought from numberless street stalls.

Plaza Garibaldi is another place that you shouldn't miss. From early afternoon various musicians start to gather there wearing typical clothes. It's also very close to Plaza de las Tres Culturas with Tlatelolco area where you can visit Templo de Santiago and Aztec pyramid ruins.
If you don't want to walk, take tube Linea 8, Plaza Garibaldi Station.
