Along the Seine, near the Eiffel Tower, and near Sacre Couer, we were accosted many times by people pretending to "find" a gold ring on the ground near where we had just walked. Do not allow yourself to be caught up in a conversation with them. Just keep moving. They aim to distract you, perhaps sell the ring, or get a pickpocketing friend to check your bags out.

The beggars hear you speak English, then they come up saying "do you speak English" and holding out a paper note telling some hardluck story about a cousin in hospital who they need money for.
