Thursday 20th July.
The sunshine was shining into our bedroom around 7.00am, so we woke early to pack for our drive to Milan via Monaco. We headed off around 10.00am after Peter and the kids picked up the car from Hotel Elena carport, which was supposed to be fascinating for its robot system which lifts the cars down to the garage floor.
The drive on the autobahn to Monaco took approx 2 – 3 hours and was rather boring, but the views coming into Monaco were spectacular and dramatic, a dazzling impressive view overlooking the city and the magnificent Mediterranean Ocean. One definitely gets the feeling that this country is blessed with an abundance of prosperity and wealth.
The road winds down the mountain through affluent streets filled with opulence and modern apartments and shops. We parked our car in the local car parking station and headed off by foot to explore the city; our first stop was to visit the magnificent building of Monte-Carlo Casino.
The Casino was built by Charles Garnier, the architect of the opera house in Paris, built the Casino in 1878.The “atrium”, paved in marble, is surrounded by 28 Ionic columns in onyx. It leads into the auditorium of the opera, called the “Salle Garnier”, which is decorated in red and gold, with a profusion of bas-reliefs, frescoes and sculptures. Here, for more than a century, outstanding international performances of opera, ballet and other entertainment.
Peter was keen to explore the Casino and get his much treasured chip but unfortunately Jacko had not brought his Drivers License, so unfortunately we were not allowed in, but we did get a chance to observe the glorious stained glass ceilings and windows in the entrance. We were all feeling hungry so we chose a café close to the Casino to have lunch. After, we walked back to the car mesmerized by the wonderful shops which were on offer.
We left Monaco around 3pm and headed back to the autobahn, but that became a huge problem as Peter was having incredible difficulty doing a hill start, maneuvering the handbrake and gears on a hill and driving on the wrong side of the road was not an easy feat. Basically, we were all silently praying for a flat ground but that is almost impossible in Monaco.
Eventually, after a few attempts we were on our way to Milan. The drive was long and hard with heaps of traffic; we finally arrived at the Crowne Plaza in Linate around 7.30pm. We booked into our rooms 707 and 727 which were very ordinary and proceeded to have dinner in the hotel restaurant. The kids opted for a buffet dinner whilst Peter and I chose to eat more up market in the restaurant next door. We all retired to bed around midnight, as we have a very early start tomorrow morning.
