by Openseas - last update: Feb 28, 2008

There's something about Alice.

Alice is a wonderful outback town with plenty of activities to keep any keen traveler interested, blended with complete isolation and limited facilities Alice Springs has held Australian outback uniquely wrapped and nestled into her blood and heritage.

The best thing about Alice is you can fly direct from Adelaide, Brisbane, Broome, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Sydney and Ayres Rock. Therefore, the possibility of organizing an itinerary around Australia gives travelers heaps of options.

Coach transfers operate services between Alice, Kings Canyon and Uluru. Cars can be hired from Alice Springs Airport.

Hire a car and do the Mereenie Loop, which begins and ends at Alice. A 4WD car is necessary regarding this drive. You will however need to obtain a permit which can be found at the Central Land Council or just pop into the information centre to gather any other information about this route.

Aboriginal Hertiage

Aboriginal Heritage.

The Indigenous people lived in Australia, for at least 40,000 – 45,000 years before James Cook discovered the East Coast of Australia. It is interesting to note, how the Europeans thought Australia was terra nullius, owned by no one.

It is thought at least one million Aborigines lived in Australia, and there were approximately 300 languages spoken, not to mention their many dialects. So, really Australia was already a Nation and a fully populated country. Most of the Aborigines lived through various parts of Australia, and clans were important to their everyday existence, they were not always nomadic but used their skills in hunting and observering the seasons.

The word Aboriginal is an English word the Europeans used to describe our earliest inhabitants. The aborigines are proud people, which are shown through their flag and knowledge of their beloved country and homeland. The Aboriginal flag is red, black and yellow which now hangs proudly in unison with the Australian National flag.

Red Black and Yellow are the colours of our band
Black is for the people of this Southern Land.
Yellow is for the mighty giver in the sky
Red is our people's blood son onward we survive.

On May the 26th 1998 the Government recognized and formally apologized to the Aboriginal people and a National Sorry Day was celebrated with community activities and the signing of "sorry books". A day that our indigenous people accepted and a step was made towards reconciliation and admission of responsibility from the Australian Government , whom removed over 80,000 Aboriginal children from their parents and beloved tribes.
