Magnetic Island is located just 10 kilometres off Townsville, on the Queensland eastern coast. The car ferry or passenger ferry departs from Townsville regularly and arrives on Magnetic Island at Nelly Bay.
The Island was first discovered and named by Captain Cook in 1770 after he had severe problems working his compass; he believed that a strange magnetic force existed on the Island so aptly named it Magnetic Island.
The island consists of twenty three bay beaches which surround the island. Two thirds of the island is National Parks, so there is an abundance of Australian native wildlife, like wallaby’s, Koalas, possums and over 100 species of birdlife. Magnetic Island is truly a unique natural island offering naturalists, tourists and travellers a wonderful enriched experience.
Depending on your time schedule Magnetic Island can be explored in a few hours, days or weeks. The island only takes approx one hour to drive around as most of the sealed roads lead into the major beach attractions. You do however, need a 4WD for other dirt roads which off shoot from the major road around the island. Most of the island is National Parks, so one can only literally see half the island by road; otherwise there are some excellent walking tracks which lead you through the stunning national Parks. |
