We spent a couple of weeks...

We spent a couple of weeks going all over Malaysia, our last stop being Penang Island. We ate at hawker stands, small cafes, 5 star hotels, and one of our best meals was a huge department store with a floor upstairs devoted to many different stalls, each specializing in whatever imaginable food you could think of.

In such circumstances, you are often the only tourists on the whole floor, you are immersed with the local population. In no time at all, someone will want to 'practice' their English, so I will defer completing this section, it has never been our practice to keep track of where we have eaten.

Favorite Dish: In Malaysia, there are a variety of curries, specific kinds for beef, another for chicken, green, brown, red, yellow, all curries now come packaged in little silver packages. We bought tons of these, and have come fairly close to duplicating the blends of gravies.

Even Duncan, BC now has some of these in the local Canadian Superstore, along with Malaysian and Thai noodles, a staple dish in Malaysia and the entire SE Asia.
We had a marvelous seafood dinner in Malacca at a Portuguese restauarant but I could not tell you the name of it. Likewise at a small fishing village on the backroads of our return to Johor Bahru. I do believe that we may have been the first tourists to eat in this village, they seemed tickled to have us and kept bringing out sample plates of different specialties. We were absolutely stuffed by the time we left to catch the late bus back to home base.

In Malaysia, some of the best food is offered along the highway rest stops. These are very large buffets, they are cheap, all you can eat, any dish you want, a flat price. The dishes are excellent and while they may not have ambience, we'd had weeks and weeks of 5 star travel and welcomed getting back down to Earth.
