"Industrial mess" Katowice by littlebush

Katowice Travel Guide: 214 reviews and 491 photos

Theres nothing special about Katowice. It was born in the industrial revolution and is still now home to over 60 coal mines and other factories. Its more 13 small cities combined into one to form Katowice. Theres nothing much to see. I was there for Englands football match in Sept 2004(we won 2-1). Its an 1 1/2 hour from Krakow by train (£1.80, 11ZL). The town centre is ok , and worth a look around. the main street is Ul Stawowa, which is pedestrianised with bars and restaurants, right near the station.
Theres a couple of museums, and a church to look at. The main attraction is the planetarium, in the park of culture and recreation, which is where the national football stadium is too, and the hotel we stayed at.
Note, that there are hardly any hotels in town. Every search i done on the net trying to find somewhere to stay kept coming back with the same 5 or 6 hotels, and they were all booked due to the football, so best not to come here when theres a game on!
