Brussels is a stylish city where business-suited Eurocrats hope to build continental unity in one of Europe's only bilingual capital cities. Its millenniums-old tradition of pragmatic mercantilism and international relations is symbolized by grand halls, fabulous architecture and Pis Mannekin, the sculpture of a little boy urinating that has become the city's beloved symbol.
Central Brussels is divided into two main areas, the Lower and Upper Towns. The Lower Town comprises the medieval city center, built around the imposing Grand Place, a former market square. The area is easy to get around on foot, its cobbled streets leading to popular quarters such as Ilôt Sacré, Ste Catherine, St Géry and Marolles.
Brussels population is 1 million people.
I visited Brussels with my girlfriend for a 24 hour visit from London on a Ryanair flight costing just £16 for a return! We loved it! Its a very pretty city, cobled streets in the old part and a great cafe culture.
The Grand Place is where its all at in the city centre with the old buildings of the Hotel De Ville and the Guildhalls. Further out of town are the parliament buildings where the EU has some of its largest debates.
