"Depends what youre going for...." Kotu by littlebush

Kotu Travel Guide: 7 reviews and 17 photos

Kotu is one of the main tourist resort beaches on the Gambia's atlantic coast.
Its located just 30mins out of Banjul, and a similar time from the airport by taxi.
When i say resort, i mean it has many tourists and tourist hotels, however these hotels are all very modest and you do not see high rise grand hotels.
Kotu itself is limited in terms of bars/restaurants, the main strip of bars/restaurants is on Senegambia road, in Kololi, about a 2mile taxi ride away (50 dalasis - £1.10).
The beach is 'ok' - the sand is fine but the water isnt tropical island turquoise, it clear (ish) to waist deep then gets dirty - and it cold! but the beaches are huge and clean.
The biggest 'problem' is the bumsters, fruit sellers etc - obviously these people, who live in incredibly poor conditions compared to the West, are just trying to make a living, but at the same time, when youre hassled every few minutes with the same 'chat', its becomes frustrasting and its hard to keep polite.
The local people are friendly and you will shake hands so many times.
There are a few scams (see tourist traps) so beware.

For some people, this kind of touristy stuff is fine.
For me, i prefer to get away from it all, and only booked the package holiday as it was cheaper than a flight.
In the end, we went off to Jinack Island (see separate page) which was a perfect tranquil experience, a million miles away from the coast.

Dont get me wrong, if you after some sun, somewhere farily cheap, just 5.5hours from the UK with no jet lag, this is a good option, but be aware its a compelte tourist place and you WILL get hassled.
