Essaouira is a lovely port town 3 hours west of Marrakesh(Well the bus is advertised as being 2 1/2 hours west but it actually takes 3 1/2hrs!). The town is surrounded by an old wall built something like the 11th century. There is a big portuguese influence in the architecture. The population is 50,000, but there are a lot of tourists here. The best thing to do is wander around the winding narrow streets admiring the vendors selling anything from carpets to wooden carvings to food. The port is busy with people coming off boats with todays catch - theres great views from the near the cannons. Its a real great place to chill out, especially to watch the sun go down. The beach isnt great but its mainly busy with locals playing football(with, i have to say, the smallest goals ever!). |
