Douglas is probably what some people might call a salubrious suburb. Its about 10 minutes drive from the city and has many of the mod-cons one might need. There is a cinema, two shopping centres with large supermarkets and numerous restaurants as well as fast food joints. It also has free car parking in the shopping centres which is an added bonus if you are driving as there no free parking in the city of Cork. It is also serviced by regular buses both to the city and to other suburbs (7,7A,16,19)
