Bocas del Toro

Colombus first stepped on the islands in 1502 searching for a way to cross over to the Pacific. Then Bocas del Toro became an important port for fruit trading but this faded out when the trade moved on to other points. The first tourists came up in early nineties and nowadays although there is a large flow of them the place hasn't yet been too touristic. The key to this is that locals have kept their quiet and slow pace of life and a lot of their Afro Caribbean flavour.
In the evenings you can enjoy dining at restaurants on the seafront on the lovely terraces with wonderful sea views, or have some drinks and join the very lively night parties in bars and hotel bars. Iguana is a good one playing mostly good reggae and Barco Hundido with a sunken boat lit in the water under it also attracts a young happy crowd.

A large choice of excursions and snorkeling trips is available to the outlaying islands which are deeply vegetated and are surrounded by coral reefs and superb beaches. In Cayos Zapatillas the beach is one of the best. Cycling and horse back riding are a pleasant way to explore the island although roads are far from good. Wildlife on the islands includes monkeys, toucans, sloths, parrots, iguanas and the tiny poisonous frogs. Many kinds of turtles make their nests on the Bastimentos beaches which belong to the National Park of Bastimentos.
Hiking is nice on the islands but always with a guide as it is easy to get lost. On Bastimentos you can visit the cave and the lake in the interior of the island.
