San Agustin was a sacred place where the indigenous people used to honour their dead and worship their gods. Their social structure was well organised focusing to the family. The numbers of everyday tools found show their main occupation was Agriculture. Many previous cultures have left their prints like remains of constructions or sculptures. Many date back 4,000 or 6,000 years ago and they know there are a lot more buried underneath. Some are 4 meters tall and weigh several tons.
The name comes from the a Bishop of Popayan who came first. The village of San Agustin was founded in 1790.
What plays a very important role here is the scenery. You reach the sculptures walking through verdant paths. The nature around is lush as the ground is very fertile with a great biodiversity of flora and fauna . The panoramic views from the tombs is astonishing! And Rio Magdalena flows just next to the site.
Deservedly it is an UNESCO world Heritage site.
