San Pedro - an oasis in the desert

As the bus is monotonously sliding on the straight line of the desert road you can make out an oasis sprouting out in the distance. This green hope standing alone in the vastness is San Pedro de Atacama.
Coming in , you aren't disappointed..The desert style walls embracing the adobe houses, the dirt roads, the absence of city noises and the dominating view of the volcano makes up a unique picture. There are fields and lots of trees around the city center , which, as locals told me, have been created by human effort. Everything has been carried and planted by local people even in areas further out of the city.

I can imagine the beauty of it some 15 years ago, without touristic vans running around the narrow dirt roads , and the ugly touristic signs marring the serene atmosphere. But still it is far from being abused. There are still places away from the center where you can gaze at the starry night sky with a sigh of happiness.
There are some nicely decorated bars and restaurants which are romantically lit in the night.
The tones of light brown are dominating, and it's wise of the locals who insisted on keeping the dirt roads..

There are many things to do in and around the city so you can easily spend a week or more in San Pedro.
There are day walks leading to thermal springs, and ruins.
Day trips taking you to the lakes of the Altiplano, or to the Andean villages.
The unique sights of Valle de la Luna or Valle de la Muerte.
The incomparable sight of Tatio Geysers.
The Salar de Atacama with the beautiful flamingos.
Difficult, because of the altitude, but fulfilling climbs of a volcano.
And last but not least the 4-day trip over to Bolivia if you are travelling that way.
You can, of course, come back if you aren't.

I am not planning a trip any time soon, but it sounds wonderful, and I loved your description of the dancing flamingos!

I've spent all morning looking at your marvellous photos from all over the world (instead of tidying up which I should have been doing). I like this small page very much too. Happy birthday from Finland!
