Historical sites As mentioned in other part of my Scotland section, Orkney has an interesting collection of old villages, stone circles and archaelogical finds. Orkney has a wealth of Neolithic sites to visit of which Maeshowe, the standing stones of stenness, the ring of brodgar and skara brae are the most spectacular. Th Ring of Brodgar was erected around 2750BC. The ring of Brodgar is located at the heart of the West Mainland. |
St. Magnus Cathedral The imposing 12th century St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall was built by the Norse Earl Rognvald Kolson in honour of his murdered uncle Earl Magnus Erlendson. Its right in the middle of the town and the warm-coloured old red sandstone makes the building especially striking. Its worth a visit. |

Nature The predominant daytime colours in Orkney are the greens, blues and browns of grass, water and moor. These colours vary with the season and are particular vibrant in summer. Orkney is also famous for its sunsets and for its long hours of daylight in summer. The northern lights are occationally seen. |
