The Citadel in Aleppo

Pick a castle

Syria is full of interesting and amazing old castles, most of them from the Crusader Era, and it is worth seeing as many as possible!
The most important though are Krak Des Chevaliers, Qala'at Saladin and the Citadel in Aleppo.
It will take you hours to get there, hours to see them but it is all worth it when you stan in the middle of what was once the finest Crusader castle in the world.
Old City - souq Al- Hamidiyya

Damascus - Old City

Settlements in this part of Damascus dates back to 15th century BC and the Roman era is evident in some parts of the street plan, but tnow its mainly the medival Islamic character that showws through.
This part of the city has been flattend and rebuilt a number of times and when you walk around the souq there are bulletholes in the roof from plains shooting at the souq.
In the northwest corner of the Old City you will find the Citadel that was a Roman fort and later strengthend by Saladin to keep out Crusaders.
Old house in Damascus

Old houses

Damascus is full of hidden pearls. You have to know where to go to find the old palaces hidden in the souq behind grey fronts and modern concrete.
The houses are built around courtyards and decorated with beautiful decorations. In many of the old houses you will now find cafes and restaurants, but it is still possible to find nice quiet courtyards where (if you ask nicely) you can sit for a while and listen to the sound of the city outside the walls. Some off these places are Beit Aqqad, Beit as-Sibai,and Beit Nizam.

Pros:"not so many tourists, very little western influence, no fast food chains"
Cons:"at times you tend to get very tired in Syria because everything takes forever!"
In A Nutshell:"Great hospitality and great food"
