Even if you don't surf, this is a great spot

It's an hour and a bit from Rio, with frequent buses, there are few people, fewer tourists and the power of the atlantic here makes it truly special. A great place to chill out, to meet Brazilians, swim in a cold sea, not see another soul on the miles of golden beaches .... basically counter-balance the constant partying of Rio. It has a fairly austere feel to it, but for me that was part of the charm. There aren't loads of restaurants, bars and parties so you get to read the books you haven't, write, paint, practise surfing, go cycling, horseriding... and if you still want plenty of skol or caiprinhas, Caricoans spend time here at the weekends & on holidays, which means beach, booze and music.

Staying in Saquarema

There are lots of choices here, but my main piece of advice is DON'T STAY AT THE ITAUNA INN!!! It's the featured guest house in the Lonley Planet I think, and also first on a google search, but is (aside from location - it's on the beach) rubbish! Overpriced, the water often doesn't work, the internet connection doesn't ever work, the drains smell... stay away. The owner isn't going to change anything in the near future. I know as I stayed in Saquarema for a few weeks and talked to lots of people that know him, including his staff. The place I stayed at was the Garden Guesthouse, it was less than £100 (140 euros) for a week for a house to sleep 5! And that included buffet breakfast, internet access and use of a bicycle... and my own food shopping for the week. And the owner Claudia was unbelievably kind and helpful, in true Brazilian style. Can't recommend it enough. http://www.cpsanet.com/GardenGuestHouse/

As may be obvious... I was obsessed with sunset!
