Beautiful sunset
I can't say much about Khao Lak. We went here to take a 3 day live-aboard boat to/around the Similan islands. We didn't see much of Khao Lak itself.

we were there in february so it was a bit hard to find cheap available accomodation. we still thought it was affordable
When (what time in the year) have you been there? At least in the low season, there are much cheaper bungalows directly at the beach - e.g. Garden Beach Resort (400Bht/Night)
