Off The Beaten Path: Whitby, on the North East...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Whitby, on the North East coast of England (see Travelogue entry) is an old fishing and seafaring village. It used to be a whaling port, but thankfully that's stopped now. Captain Cook, who discovered Australia, began his career here. Nowadays Whitby is a popular destination for day-trippers from the surrounding counties, and is famous for it's fresh fish, it's Abbey and it's Old Town.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Southwold (see Travelogue entry) is a particulary lovely seaside town on the Suffolk coast, in the part of England know as East Anglia. Southwold boasts one of the best independant breweries left in Britain - Adnams, and has some lovely buildings, a great beach and a magnificent church.

  • Tip Rating:
  • The Yorkshire Dales lie mostly in the county of West Yorkshire, fairly near the city of Leeds. The Dales boast beautiful countryside and although near to large population centres you can still find tranquility if you avoid the tourist hotspots. Great walks to suit all abilities, lovely villages with tearoooms, shops, accomodations etc.

  • The North East coast.

Not a lot of people bother visiting the North East coast. It's a fascinating place with a lot of industrial architecture, so decent beaches, ancient monuments and lovely villages.

  • Tip Rating:
  • The Scottish Highlands are really all off the beaten path. Once you get beyond the Glasgow/Edinburgh corridor you are into an almost unrivalled wilderness of tranquility and beauty!
The picture here is of Rannoch Moor, a really lonely and beautiful spot to the Souh East of Fort William.

This landmark stands by the A1 road at Gateshead in Tyne & Wear. You would drive right past it if you are heading towards Newcastle from the south.

Great pic - Thanks. Here in "Barking Town" we have the UK's 2nd largest public artwork called "Holding Pattern" - It's 70m long x 50m wide and almost 6m high. It cost £650,000 to build and only Anthony Gormley's “Angel of the North” is bigger.

Hi Steve. Have never been to the UK before, but really hoping to make it there next year. Lovely overview of the country here, great photos, nice tips! Veggie pubs? Wish we had 'em here, too! Greetings from the desert / Jess :-)
