At the "Deutsches Eck" (it means "German Corner") in Koblenz is a truly enormous monument to Kaiser Wilhelm. You can climb up to it and go inside it (on several levels) for some good views out. In the summer there are concerts here, with the band arranged up the steps of the monument, with coloured lights and water cascading down the steps. Must be quite nice.

This is the view from the top of the monument. At the left we have the Mosel and at the right the Rhine. The two mighty rivers flow together here at "Deutsches Eck". It's very picturesque and watching all the boats go by is quite fascinating (OK, so we were waiting for a crash :-P)

At Deutsches Eck you just HAVE to have your picture taken. We wanted one of all three of us, so we volunteered an old German lady to take it using my digital camera. She was a bit bewildered and wondered where is the black hood thing she had to put over her head the last time she used a camera... but she clicked and clicked and took about 30 identical pictures of us. Thank goodness for digital, huh? Nice pic tho, thank you frauline.

Koblenz has two different waterfronts, one on the Rhine and one on the Mosel. The one by the Rhine gives nice views across the river to the fortress on the opposite bank, and the waterfront is lined with cafes, boat tour places, and shops selling postcards of Bavaria (????).

This is the Mosel waterfront. This runs just behind the old town and you can duck up anywhere along here to get into the main shopping and eating areas. There was a little market going on along here too, but to be honest it was mostly tat.

Koblenz has some lovely and quite colourful buildings. Here, I'll show you some, but don't ask me what they are, just a collection of churches, cafes and shops. All very lovely though...

richiecdisc Sat Aug 6, 2005 12:13 UTC Must say I've never had a chip in Germany. Good to see you found the pretzels. | KaiM Tue Dec 30, 2003 10:51 UTC Wonderful page. Interesting tourist trap tip. My girlfriend gave me the advise to stop on the side of the Autobahn, too. But I liked the view from under the bridge. | sabsi Thu Jul 3, 2003 19:23 UTC haha i saw the high bridge on telly last night and collapsed laughing :) great memories! | tessy Wed Apr 30, 2003 22:00 UTC Great page about Koblenz, the Rhine valley, the wine, the Pretzels and the loos! ;-) |
