The temples of Ggantija in the town of Xaghra on Gozo are the oldest man made constructions on the planet. They date from 3600BC and pre-date every other known construction, including the wonders of Egypt. Unfortunatley they're in a poor state of repair and are held up by an array of scaffolding which does not make for very good pictures! ;-) Also, you cannot really get a good impression of the layout of the temples unless you see them from above, so some sort of raised viewing area here would be very useful. The best you can do at the moment is to buy a postcard of an aerial view. The site is well worth visiting though, if only because of its antiquity, and the site gives some great views across the plains of this part of Gozo and down to the immense church in the town of Xewkija. |
