Beautiful Square and other Gharb, Malta Things to Do Tips

Gharb is regarded as having one of the most picturesque and quaint squares in the whole of Malta. Part of this appeal comes from the fact that you can juxtaposition the Church, cross, phone box and police station light in your photograph. This must be one of the most photographed scenes on Gozo/Malta and appears on loads of postcards & guidebooks. So naturally I had to take the picture too.

As well as the square being highly regarded, Gharb church (Church of the Visitation of Our Lady to St Elizabeth) is also regarded as being one of the finest in the whole of the Malta. It doesn't suffer from the over-sized, over-grandness of many other churches, having a beautiful symmetry in its curved baroque face.

Here's one of the churches two bell towers. It's decorated with the lights for the Festa as well as with some hangings. It was about midday and the bells were ringing a pretty carillon.

We thought that the bell ringing was in some way automated, but when we looked up at the belltowers we saw that there were guys in there ringing the bells by hand. I hope that they had ear protection!

Gharb is one of the most beautiful and well-to-do villages on Gozo and contains more "houses of character" than any other, as well as a lot of holiday rental villas. It's easy to see why, the streets are lined with lovely properties, mostly in this beautiful warm stone, and many having nice traditional balconies.
