Coventry is an ancient and once beautiful city, steeped in history, folklore and legend. In the 15th century it was one of the major provincial centres of England and later in the 1800's became one of its leading industrial centres with the opening of two of the countries first car factories. To this day the area is synonymous with engineering (and the famous Jaguar Car company is based here). Unfortunately its industrial importance meant that it was completely levelled by the Luftwaffe in 1940, and as the British do not have the same passion for "rebuilding as was" as our European neighbours, much of historic Coventry is now gone forever, replaced by concrete, brick and glass. The new Cathedral stands in stark juxtaposition to the neigbouring ruins of the original Cathedral, and there are only a handful of the historic buildings of Coventry remaining. It's still quite a pleasant city in spite of this, a good shopping centre and with a lot of parkland and open spaces. It's also a great base at the heart of "Shakespeare Country" and the rest of the Midlands. Because of its "moderness" I've never taken a picture in Coventry itself (maybe I'll remedy that this year) but have taken loads in the surrounding delights of Warwickshire. This page will centre on those places for now.
(Because of this "new look" VT I suggest you click on the Must See Activities link below, take a look at what there is to see around Coventry and maybe follow the links from there to the travelogues that cover these items in more detail)
|

evaanna Sat Oct 21, 2006 20:48 UTC I did hope you would show me some interesting places in Coventry itself as I couldn't find any apart from the ruins of the cathedral. I agree with you that the area around the city is much more interesting than the city itself. | MURRA Tue May 28, 2002 15:40 UTC good wor | Chris_Sutton Tue May 14, 2002 20:37 UTC I used to work there! | jessica-tob Tue May 7, 2002 15:39 UTC Nice page, but what about Nuneaton?? ;) |
