Yorkshire

by steventilly - last update: Sep 20, 2002

Yorkshire is the largest of the English counties and traditionally it was split into three administrative regions (called "Ridings") - North Riding, West Riding and East Riding.
Government boundary changes meant that the county was split into 3 regions that did not follow the old traditional Ridings - North, West and South. Later changes meant that once again the county of East Yorkshire was formed, so now there are 4 "ridings" in Yorkshire. Confusing or what?
Each of these areas have their own character and their own "dominating industries".
North Yorkshire is mainly agricultural and is one of of the most beautiful areas of Britain with its moors and its dales, both of which are National Parks. There are not many big towns and cities in North Yorkshire, York being the exception. There are lots of lovely small market towns though, and the small Cathedral City of Ripon.
West Yorkshire was in the past mainly mills and textiles and is now adapted to other types of manufacturing. This is a quite densley populated area with large towns and cities such as Leeds, Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield, but there are also a lot of lovely small towns and villages out in the pennines.
South Yorkshire is traditionally coal mining and iron & steel making, and the cities of Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham reflect this and have little to offer the tourist, though things are changing slowly. Sheffield is on the boundaries of the Peak District National Park and I will use Sheffield as the page for showing that part of the country.

These pages will be a trip around some of the parts of Yorkshire that I enjoy most, though York and Hull are covered in their own pages. Most of the things to see will be under "Off The Beaten Path", so click the link for that, below.
