We arrived at Liverpool and parked at King's Dock, which is maybe the best place to park, because the car park is not only huge, but it's free too. What's more, it's right next to the Albert Dock, which is a good place to start the tour of Liverpool.

Directions: Right by the Mersey, just off the dual carriageway that runs right along there.

Granada TV have studios at Albert Dock and the famous "Good Morning" with Richard & Judy came from there. The floating weather map was a fixture of the show and Fred the weatherman used to leap about on it showing us how the weather would be. One famous day a streaker leapt on and joined him on the map. I told Sabs this tale, and overheard many others recounting the tale too. I guess it's the most famous thing to have happened here.

Opened in 1988 this claims to be the largest gallery of modern art outside of London. Mind you, so does the Baltic in Gateshead, so who knows. We didn't have time to visit on this trip - another "rainy day" destination for us.

There's a variety of shops around Albert Dock, from designer stores to tacky souvenier shops. It gives you an early chance to buy postcards and some presents for the folks back home, so you don't have to worry about it later. Sabs was well impressed with her "Yellow Submarine" - pity she didn't buy another for Bigs!

The propeller of The Lusitania sits outside the Maritime Museum, on the walk from the Albert Dock to the Pier Head. Lusitania sank in 1915 (though we don't know how that happened, but I suspect that German U-boat U-20 had some part to play in this mystery...)

This is a view from near the Lusitania propeller looking across what was called Canning Dock (in my day) towards a beautiful brick building that reminds me of the Butchers Hall in Antwerp. This building is the former HQ of the White Star Line, owners of The Titanic, who later became part of the Cunard Line (see later tip).

The most famous (and beautiful) of the buildings on Liverpool's waterfront are colloquailly known as "the three graces". They are (from nearest to furthest) the Dock Board Offices, The Cunard Building and The Liver Building. Blending in well with these three is one of my favourites - the mersey tunnel ventilation tower. Designed by Herbert Rowse it looks more like a building than a ventilation duct and blends in very nicely with the surrounding buildings. It is a classic of art deco design.

Built in 1907 for the then Mersey Docks and Harbour Board Company. Quite a classical design, with it's domed roof and its towers. Apparently it is quite ornate inside too, though we didn't visit.

Built during WW1 as the HQ of the Cunard Shipping Line. Another classical design, supposedly taking inspiration from Italian Pallazzos. It's a bit dwarfed by its neighbours, but blends in nicely for all that.
