One of the UK's largest cities, Manchester is one of the prime cultural, shopping, leisure and sports destinations in the UK.

The City Centre hosts some of the country's finest shopping names and the out-of-town Trafford Centre is one of the best around.

The city centre has undergone a lot of redevelopment with new shops and features such as Printwiorks and Urbis.

The Castlefield area has some good museums, bars and cafes or is just a good place for a stroll.

A little out of the centre, Salford Quays is a picturesque and interesting area, with shops, cinema, hotels, cafes and of course The Lowry and The Imperial War Museum.

Manchester is the home of Manchester United, Manchester City and Lancashire Cricket Club, as well as the National Indoor Cycling Centre, and hosted the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

For nightlife it's hard to beat, with many of the countrys top clubs and a host of bars and restaurants.

On the darker side, Manchester is one of the countrys prime drug centres, though this shouldn't pose a problem to toursists.
